Crystal Premo:

This is exactly how I have been explaining it to the actors I teach. It's a little harder for them to grasp because of their inexperience with with music.
The reverse situation can happen too. I only very recently realized that the musical instructions that Vachel Lindsay put into "General William Booth Enters Into Heaven" apply to the lines *preceding* the instructions, not those that follow. No musically-trained person would ever arrange things that way!

I could only find one folk song that was pre-programmed with a meter change, and it is not the type that speeds things up.

Depending how it's written down, "Here We Come A-Wassailing" might fill the bill. 6/8 changes to 2/4 (or 4/4), the beat remains constant and the note values slow down. Nice and seasonal, too.
