I just checked this, and there is an option in Edit/Preferences/Display called "smooth line art" that seems to make a big difference in whether, for example, the beams on beamed sixteenth or eighth notes are smooth or jagged, which was not turned on by default in Acrobat Reader 5.1 for Windows XP.
