For arranging a Bach fugue that is true, but notating a work by a modern microtonal composer using the notational devices of J.S. Bach is impossible, thus proving that even in the analog world of manuscript there isn't backwards compatibility. If somebody who only knew how to work with Bach's notational language were to confront a microtonal (or aleatoric) composition they would NOT be "backwards-compatible."

For the less computer-intense folks, here's an analogy. Doing a 4-part voicing in realistic Bach fugue style is terribly difficult if you don't know what you're doing. For an accomplished arranger, it is just about automatic.
