If it's any consolation (probably not), I've been following MacFixit (and similar sites) for years, and using a variety of FireWire devices for a long time, and this is the first I've ever heard of the problem.

You might want to go onto the support boards at Apple and ask your question (about improved protection against bad cables) there.

There's been an ongoing discussion there for some time about this -- nobody seems to know the answer, and certainly nobody from Apple seems to be even admitting that it's a problem (which means they're not going to admit to having "fixed" anything). Well, it looks like I'll just have to plug in and hope for the best.
