r.p.> I, too, have heard that many instrumentalists (specifically r.p.> violinists) prefer leger lines to 8va symbols. I can accept this up to r.p.> 5-leger-line (and a half) c4. Do players really prefer leger lines r.p.> even higher?
Few people will be able to sight-read parts that are consistently above c4 anyways, so it probably doesn't matter. Violin part 8va in more common ranges (up to B or C) drives me nuts, even though I'm used to reading octave transpositions on the piano.
