I'll be shameless enough to plug, to the whole list, two exceptional Louisville Orchestra CDs:
LCD 008 Music of John Corigliano 1. Gazebo Dances (15:57) 2. Voyage for String Orchestra (8:14) 3. Summer Fanfare (6:20) 4. Promenade Overture (8:23) 5. Campane di Ravello (3:38) 6. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (32:13) James Tocco, pianist (Hmm, I don't see the other I was going to mention - Joan Tower Concerti. I do hope it is not out of print, that would be a pity. The other Joan Tower piece we still have listed is pretty minor.) ------ Also, I believe Husa is probably over 70, but he is, IMHO, today's greatest living composer, and I love these two works. (I believe "Apotheosis" was originally written for concert band, with the band members doing much voice work. This version is for orchestra and chorus and is quite effective.) LCD 005 Witold Lutoslawski: 1. Fanfare for Louisville (1:19) Karel Husa: 2. Apotheosis of This Earth (27:24) 3. Monodrama (Portrait of an Artist) (24:24) Paul Creston: 4. Invocation and Dance (12:51) Both of these CDs are available at the best stores and at: http://www.louisvilleorchestra.org/site.php3?page=ito_edition3.htm If we ever release our 1972 LP of the orchestra version of Husa's "Music for Prague" on CD, get that, too (I was all of 20, in my first season in the LO at the time of the recording session, but it holds up!). It's a beautiful work, and one of the great works of the last half of the century. The orchestra version stands up quite well to, perhaps even improves upon, the classic concert band original (I believe the second movement definitely surpasses it). ---- Raymond Horton Bass Trombonist Louisville Orchestra ----- Original Message ----- From: "Andrew Stiller" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "finale list" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2004 11:54 AM Subject: [Finale] TAN: best new music > The older I get, the more out of touch I feel with recent musical > developments, and I don't like that. > > As a remedy, I'd like to ask the list, especially those of you w. > large recording collections, what you consider to be the top 20 > available CDs of works composed in the last 30 years by composers who > are now less than 70 years old. > > Please reply privately, unless you think your particular selection > would be of special interest to the Finale list as a whole.
