and here are some lines for the 'Terminal' utility to clear the icon caches on OS X:
rm ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.UserCache.csstore; sudo rm /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.LocalCache.csstore;
There are also utilities like "Cache Cleaner" and "Cache Out X" which do a thorough job.
