Thanks much for the ideas.  I tried the StuffIt Expander, but coudn't find a
way to get that to work.  I had already tried changing the extension to .mus
but still got "invalid file type" message when trying to open in Finale.  So
I'm asking him to resend the file with the .mus extension already on it, or
as an .etf file to see if that does it.  (It looks like Brad was right that
Windows is adding the .dat extention, & it appears there is no option to
stop it from doing that.)
