Where David W. Fenton writes:

But [using type into score] you have to do the entry in the correct order to get the lyrics to come out comprehensibly.

I would suggest instead, that one merely needs to understand how Finale places syllables in the lyrics area of the data file, in order to be able to comprehend the lyrics. Finale does places the data here in a predictable way, but the documentation specialists have either neglected to, or decided not to tell us exactly what that way is. If one knows what the way is, then the knowledge provides a set of tools to do other things.

And you have to put in non-printing text to keep track of where you are. Why should you need to do that? Because the mechanism itself isn't good enough without your workarounds.

I don't need those extras when using click assignment, because I don't *need* separate text for the different voices.

Well, again, if I were adopting your work habits, I would still use those extras. It's not that finale needs them to work correctly, nor do I need them, but I find they do save a lot of time, especially if I need to revisit old work, by clarifying exactly where (to borrow your method) a lyric variant is used. My way of viewing these is to consider them to be a kind of marginal comments, or perhaps more aptly, a bookmark made from a post-it note [Just looking, I see four of these post-it (R) bookmarks in my copy of Ross' book, two in Stone's, and too many in Read's to count]. I could certainly find the information without the post-it, but when I need the information, it's a whole lot faster to use the post-it to take me right to the desired page quickly.

The tags I use are not the only way to do this; I could easily invent other methods of achieving the same end without using tags. My choice of using tags grew out of my desire to understand (when confronted with things I didn't understand in the lyrics system) just how that system worked, and I found them so useful I've just continued to use them.
