These are good points.
However, I've been trying to get my voice students to read music for the last twenty years, and I'd be so surprised to find a singer who does anything but follow the lyrics.

Actually, I have seen this type of notation, but mostly on vocal music with a backup CD-track. Since the CD is keyed to the measure number as played, it was needed to clarify where on the CD matches what part of the music.
I've seen it in other situations, too, but I can't recall exactly why. (Some of my old band music was marked this way.) I think it was for marching music where timing on the football field made a difference ... but that was such a long time ago.
