In Hiro's case the situation is quite different. He explains to them that he needs four authorizations of the same software. Now, if I was them, I would really start to wonder. Personally I can't really believe that this is really necessary, but I accept that Hiro may think he needs this. But from their point of view there is one user who asks for 4 authorizations. I would be suspicious what these were for, too, regardless of the explanations given. Since there has to be some way of dealing with such requests, I am pretty sure MM decided they would dish out another authorization if a good explanation was given, but that any more would simply not be possible. A pretty sensible way to deal with this.
I am not even sure what Hiro is complaining about. Do you really want iLok for Finale? I am pretty sure I would not want that myself. Nor any other hardware device, especially as I am on a laptop and don't want some piece of plastic sticking out of my USB port, but I also don't like the idea of that at all.
A different policy from MM? What would that look like? 4 authorizations for everyone? They'd be shooting themselves into their own foot that way.
No copy protection? Ok, that I could agree with, but it's not going to happen, and we all agreed to the copy protection when we got the protected software. It's not like MM made a secret out of it.
Transferable authorization? Ask a Sibelius user how well that works, the last I heard people weren't exactly impressed. Plus, in Hiro's case I rather doubt this would be the answer, as the process of de-authorising and re-authorising would be far too inconvenient when he just wants to use the next free machine to enter a few bars of music.
Here is my opinion on this: You got your third (extra) authorization, now stop whining. It's already more than you payed for.

Please Note: Finale 2004/2005 requires that you register the software within 30 days. New with Finale version 2004, you are now authorized to install Finale on two computers for your use in locations such as home and office. [more]
That's pretty clear, isn't it? As far as I remember this information was there all the time. You are asking for more, and they say you should pay more.
Still, if there was a way, as promised, to transfer authorizations from one computer to another, one could have three or four computers, and switch the installations from one computer to another. I have three computers (two desktops and one laptop I only use when I'm travelling), but never use more than one at the time. If MM had held their promise, I could transfer one of my two copies onto my laptop before I leave.
I've never need to take Finale with me. But now I'm curious. If someone wanted to switch computers, how does MM know one copy has been uninstalled from one of the two computers?
