All Macs -- high-end or not -- now have USB 2 and FireWire, both of which have more than enough bandwidth to spare for MIDI.
I agree, USB 1.1 is inadequate for MIDI + everything else, but that's why the pros get a FireWire or USB 2 MIDI interface.
