In this particular instance, it would seem that Finalescript doesn't work for me. I can only assume that my printer is in some way incompatible with the script. It does everything right except that it doesn't print double-sided. I don't resent the time I've spent trying to get it to work, but in the meantime I will, as Jonathan suggests, stick with the old method.
My printer is a Minolta/QMS PagePro 9100 with Duplex.

Does your printer need interaction with the print dialog to set up duplex?

The print dialog "remembers" (a) which printer was last used and (b) whatever Preset was last used. The default Preset ("Standard") is non- duplex. So if I have a number of documents that need to be printed double-sided, I set an appropriate Preset for the first one, then print the remainder without further intervention.

I thought this was how all printers worked (Mac OS 10.4.6).
