This has very little to do with existing software, which will still run on the new machines, with very few hardware dependent exceptions.

The point is that the current G5 is far too expensive considering you can actually buy faster Macs now for a fraction of the price.

You wouldn't buy an outdated Windows machine for 2000$ if you know you can buy a faster machine for half the price, and if you wait a few weeks you can buy a much faster top range desktop model for probably still less, or the same price. With the added advantage of full dual platform support, which the G5 does not and will not offer.
