Hmmm. It's the default action for a word extension (assuming you are using "automatic" word extensions [I hesitate to call them "smart"]) for double bars.
However, double click on the measure with the Measure Tool selected. There should be a checkbox that's labeled something like "Break smart word extensions" or something like that. Uncheck the box, and you should get the long word extension back.
