Sometimes the automatic word extensions disappear over a double bar line (i.e., 2 thin lines -- I use them at tempo changes).

The fix is to change the double bar line to a single bar line, invoke the auto-word extension, and then reapply the double barline.

Hmmm. It's the default action for a word extension (assuming you are using "automatic" word extensions [I hesitate to call them "smart"]) for double bars.

However, double click on the measure with the Measure Tool selected. There should be a checkbox that's labeled something like "Break smart word extensions" or something like that. Uncheck the box, and you should get the long word extension back. I've never had the regular word extensions actually "break" because of this, but Finale could be confusing the two.

That's right! Unchecking the "break smart word extensions" in the measure tool would do the trick. I thought that was supposed to put a space in the extension, not actually break things. The behavior of the extension is inconsistent -- sometimes it is there and sometimes it disappears.

Now if only I could find and uncheck the box that says "break enharmonics in a sneaky and annoying way when the user isn't looking"!
