Aaron and Christopher,
Maybe it is my double click setting in System Prefs. I will adjust
that and see if it helps.
Thank you both.

Is there some trick I am missing having to do with how to control

Off the top of my head, sounds to me like a mouse issue, not a
Finale issue. It sounds like there's a short in your mouse which is
sending a double-click rather than a click. Does this happen to you
in other applications? If you go to move a file icon on your
desktop, for example, do you find that the file opens before you
can move it?
I have to agree with Aaron, Chuck. I have an older mouse and it
sometimes gives me accidental double-clicks.
You mentioned a handle appearing. There shouldn't be a handle
appearing on an expression after only one click. The item should
simply get selected. Handles should only appear after a double-
click, which also selects the tool that created the item.
