Doesn't the Lincoln Center group, led by Winton Marsalis (sp.), call
it , "Lincoln Center Jazz Ensemble?" Just went to hear them play a
few months ago, but forget the exact name.

I didn't know that! It was certainly the term in use when I was in
high school in the late 70s, and still used by a band director friend
of mine in the 80s. But I've been completely out of touch with that
world for about 20 years now.
Yeah, I think some publishers still use the term, but it never made
any sense because ANY concert band is a "stage" band (unless it's a
"pit" band for musical theater). After all, early jazz was
associated with whorehouses, and with speakeasies during
prohibition as well (which is why the Paul Whiteman forays into
Carnegie Hall were so startling!), but after WW2 a lot of musicians
were getting out of the military and getting teaching degrees, and
didn't see any reason NOT to start jazz bands, but they had to
finesse their conservative school boards.
What they didn't realize was that it could get a LOT worse, and did
with Tim O'Leary and rock bands in the '60s.
Some of us wuz there at the time!
