MusicXML export works wonderfully from Finale, and Sibelius comes with
the ability to import MusicXML built-in, so it's really a very

I don't know about the latest version, but I bought Sibelius 5 at the
time and converted several files this way (using the Dolet plug-in for
better results). Of course, the notes are all there, but it's hours and
hours of work to get the file to look anything like it did in Finale. So
if you have thousands or even hundreds of Finale files, you can forget
this idea...

On the other hand, it seems that with some new versions of Finale, the same can be said upon opening older Finale files, so I'm not sure that's an argument against using Sibelius and converting your Finale files. But you can always keep your current Finale installations to work on, edit, print those existing files and create your new files in Sibelius.

In the long run one has to decide whether to stay with a company which continually reacts to customer complaints in a "we didn't fix it because it ain't broken" response or "we didn't fix it because we don't feel like fixing it" response or "it doesn't affect enough users to make it worth our while to fix it" response. And which constantly releases new versions it expects you to pay for (and forces you to pay for if you share files with others who convert to new versions of Finale) with long-term bugs unresolved.

Ultimately it might be better to start working in Sibelius because their response to their customers is much friendlier and more hopeful that bugs brought to light will be fixed and with reasonable confidence that bugs, once squashed, remain squashed with new versions, unlike some recent Finale history.

Or not -- stick with Finale if it does what you want it to do and you don't want to have two notation programs on your computer.

Something might actually change at the corporate level and the customer support department might actually start being friendly.

Does anybody wonder why Avid bought Sibelius and not Finale? I've always wondered if they even enquired into the possibility of buying Finale or simply decided not to try because of problems it found.
