I always use the 'archaic' multibar rests up to seven bars, with a number.

Hmmm. Says you. The 11/4 bar in the Rite notwithstanding, the last time I wrote a piece in 4/2, all of a sudden the double whole rest rule made a great deal of sense to me. Use it or don't, but I don't think any one of us
is in a position to declare it "archaic."
