question that Gardner Read's excellent "Thesaurus of Orchestral Devices"
might answer, but it doesn't specifically address the question.

Perhaps that's because, with respect, it's a meaningless question. Write the notes you want and we will play them. You might not like the SOUND you get, of course, just as I would probably never write for the top octave of the piano, but there is no theoretical limit to the highest range on the violin. And pizz. is not really a special effect at all.

Just don't write anything below a small g!!!

(And yeah, I know it's been done, but scordatura was a lot easier in the days of gut strings than it is today.)
