As I remember, older versions of Finale were NOT dealing with melismas correctly. A syllable that starts a melisma (in other words, one that would use a word extension, but also one that is followed by a hyphen) are SUPPOSED to be left aligned, not centered. Also, any syllable with more than five letters is supposed to be pushed right a bit, so that the third letter is centered. I think new versions of Finale do it correctly.
If you want something different than the way Finale defaults to, I'm pretty sure you can find the relevant options in the Lyric Tool. If you still have trouble, write back.
