Nobody forces you to use ethereal or Fink. I do not know any free 
ethernet package analyzer for OS X, at least certainly none that 
comes even remotely close to the capabilities of ethereal (though it 
may very well possible that one exist and I just don't know about 
it). So I think you answer your own question. "What's the 
benefit...?" - well, maybe saving $1200 ? :-)
