I had tried that but received an error. After getting your message I tried again and looked at the error more closely. It wasn't related and I fix it and I have updated fink.
BTW, after an aborted install there are all sorts of files in the sw/fink/dist folders that selfupdate will not overwrite. I deleted those files to get selfupdate to work.
Appreciate the suggestion.
