[Fink-beginners] .emacs

sorry for the second quick post, but is there also any information 
about .emacs files? what do I need to do to get them working with 
emacs21 on fink? do I have to source them if I don't log out and back 
in? I tried that with one .emacs file that worked on a SunOS machine 
and it told me there were too many '('s...
Also, where do I put it?
I have read so many times about /etc/skel/, and other directories that 
I can't seem to find, and there are two /etc/'s, one in /sw, and one in 
/sw/share/emacs21/

Is there a good beginners emacs readme out there? I have found a 
million incomplete/outdated ones. one that includes discussion of fink 
installs would be nice too (but maybe improbable).

thanks a ton, and please, again, take note: I tried to search the 
archives but it isn't working.
