FWIW, I installed xfree86 from the 10.4 bindist on an iMac/intel without problem. In particular, fc-cache did not segfault, neither in the postinstscript nor when run by hand.

RangerRick told me the same thing. I wonder if something hasn't changed.
Our fonts directories, for example, were different from his freshly
installed iMac to my freshly updated MacBook Pro.

I'm fairly sure it's not JUST the fonts since I can now run fc-cache
without errors.
