Thanks, Martin. This is really informative:

[]
ii xfree86-shlibs 4.5.0-1024 Free X11 implementation for Darwin and Mac OS X
------------------------

Thus, I have xfree86-shlibs successfully installed, and xfree86 installed
but not configured?

Yes. As you told us earlier, the installation of xfree86 failed in the post-installation phase, because fc-cache crashes with a segmentation fault. This is what others have been seeing also, and nobody knows why it does this. Since fc-cache is the last line of the PostInst script, the installation is complete, only apt-get and fink think it is not installed.

In the meantime, I experimented a bit. Started XDarwin.app in the rootless mode. (Perhaps, the terminology is wrong... I started X11 in rootless using XDarwin?)

Anyway, I get xterm windows, and can start xcalc. I also can start xcalc from
Terminal.app after setting export DISPLAY=":0.0".

However, xterm windows look weird. I cannot resize them, and I cannot close
them. On the other hand, cut&paste with my 3-key mouse works fine.

Next question: can I do something about the xterm windows? Perhaps, install
another window manager? How can I find out which window manager I'm using now?

The default window manager is probably still twm, if true "ps aux |grep wm" should show it running.

More important question: What do I do next? Uninstall xfree86 and try xorg
or Apple's X11? What would you recommend?

Apple's X11 as said earlier.
