I agree, it would be good to have a mechanism to query users in this way,
when there is a decision to be made during an upgrade.

It's a bit hard to see how we would implement that, though, with the current
Fink structure.  About the best that could be done would be some kind of
pre-install script which asked the user a question, such as "This package
no longer contains xaw3d support; you might want to install the other
variant instead; are you sure you want to continue? [Y/n]".

On the other hand, some users might get annoyed that they have to answer 
this question whenever that package is installed...
