Martin,The upgrade from non-threaded 4.2 to threaded 4.3 is not completely innocent. I am sure I have seen a fink-installed binary compiled under 4.2 complaining under 4.3 about some symbol expected in libXext but not found. I don't recall now what it was, and maybe it's really the exception. But matlab is not alone.
My understanding is that the following upgrade path:
XFree86-4.2 or Fink-4.2/ threaded-version / XFree86-4.3 or Fink-4.3
is expected to work just fine.
Finding the libraries that need recompiling is not obvious, because the breakage may appear in some configure script as in the case of xemacs. However, as has become apparent this week, the libraries shipped by Apple are not binary compatible with other versions of the libraries.I'm not sure what we can do about this, other than to post a big warning on Fink's website. We can probably include a short list of Fink binaries which are known not to work with Apple's libraries.
