While I disagreed with some of your comments, I completely agree with you here. If you look at mailing lists of other active open source projects - a good example is the linux kernel mailing list - they are having quite a few good fights, too, and it often helps clearing the ideas.

A for the news on the Fink home page, I never liked the format where one new item can push everything else to the "old news" category on the next page. I would prefer a format where each item has only a few lines on the front page plus a link to the complete item. In this way the last 5 to 10 news items can be visible on the front page. This is how many sites handle this kind of thing, and it is not only more reader-friendly, but also more "professional" looking than what we have now.
