I think the issue is a combination of a couple of things.

1. If there's news like "WATCH OUT FOR VIREX! IT WILL BREAK YOUR SYSTEM!", it shouldn't get rolled off because of a news item asking for more mirrors.

yes, that seems reasonable indeed. Something like a sticky news item that stays on top until the issue has been resolved.

2. I think a number of us are uncomfortable with the informal nature of some of the recent news stories (I know I was, but not so much I would make a big deal out of it. But, since the topic is up, I'll say something now =). While it's reasonable for any of us to talk that way in e-mail, it seems rather strange to give that kind of voice to the Fink project as a whole.

Could you expand on this? Because I am very welly aware that I am keeping my news items as inofficial as possible. There is a very distinct psyhcological effect behind it and I am doing it on purpose. I am more than willing to expand on it if that is necessary. The main idea is, that we are no highly official project with a user base that pertains to the broad public. We have a highly specialised environment and user base and I want to make them feel "at home", part of a team or family and that is easily established by keeping things down to a monimum when it comes to formal things. All our "real" announcements are _very_ formal and I strict about it to see that it keeps that way. But when I announce "on the news site" that gnome is in unstable, there does not seem to eb a need for that when the announcement itself is held as it should be held because it goes out tot he media,

In the future I think it would be better to post the informal form to fink-announce (since announcements still come from "Benjamin Reed" or "Darian Lanx" and not "fink.sourceforge.net"), and have a more formal no-nonsense version on the main site.

I disagree. The other way round seems to be the more logical one.
