It would be better to make an Alias instead of a symlink. And put it on the Desktop instead of /Applications. This would be less intrusive. During package installation, people are used to things appearing on the desktop.

Well, whose desktop do you put it on? I vote for /Applications, most apps people install end up there. Also, in this case, since the original will not be moving, i think an alias is fine; it's also much easier to create via the command line. <;-)
