After some more exchanges with BuildSmart, I still don't quite know how he managed to get the output of perl -V that he got (he did fiddle with his perl after the installation), but he more or less convinced me (*) that he is right, and Apple did indeed deliver his machine with a system containing perl-5.8.7. Is there no way to get a confirmation from Apple (msachs?) In any case, 5.8.7 is the current released version of perl, so Fink will sooner or later have to think about supporting it.

(*) The most convincing argument is an extract from lsbom of the Essentials.pkg showing among others
