Thanks. Generalizing from the one example I have seen ;-) I would say it 
is perhaps not very necessary. By default, the linker line has a flag 
-lexpect which will not work, but it is not very hard to replace this by 
-lexpect5.43 or something.

BTW, even though it is small, why does the expect-dev package install 
two copies of the lib? Is that just by natural generosity or is there a 
deeper reason for it?
