Now I'm seriously lost here. I sure hope someone can help. So far,
this list has been silent on this issue, leading me to believe that
perhaps I am trying to go about this all wrong?

I couldn't get gtk to install because, I was told, it needs
xfree86-server. So I tried to install xfree-86 server but the install
failed. I posted a note about this yesterday.

Today, I saw a note on the discussion list indicating I might benefit
by installing system-xfree86. So I tried that. That produces a
conflict with x11:

-------

  xfree86-base conflicts with x11
system-xfree86 provides x11 and is to be installed.

--------

So what do I do now? I'd blow away the x11 directory and try again
but I can't even find the x11 directory, which I'm not sure installed
right in the first place.

As you can see, I'm a real *nix/Darwin neophyte here. I've obviously
mucked this up pretty badly.
