In order to build things from source, you need to have a working C
language compiler. This is freely available with the Apple Developer Tools
kit. If you do not have this installed, you need to install it either from
the cd-rom (if you got one with your system) or by downloading it from
Apple's site. There was a significant upgrade to the kit last December, so
even if you have the CD, you'll need to download anyway if it's older than
that. The download is huge -- around 215mb -- and you have to sign up for
a free developer's account before they'll let you have it. 

Once it's installed, you should breeze past this step next time you try to
install aalib or anything else. (Without it you won't be able to install
anything at all with Fink...).
