How many users do you have?

Unless you have some strangely high number of users, this can't be the
problem. If Darwin is Unix, well Unix is built to accommodate large
numbers. And I'm sure that Darwin is too, b/c OS X Server is intended
to be run in classroom/lab settings with >30 users.

Well, ask him if he's absolutely sure that the deleting of users by
Apple software would be done in the correct Unix fashion ! :) [big,
AFAIK unfixed, bug with deleting users from "SystemPreferences->Users"]
From what I understand, there is no "correct Unix fashion" for handling
users in Darwin. Since Darwin uses NetInfo rather than the traditional
(POSIX?) /etc/passwd, the only other systems to compare it to are NeXT
boxes. Fink's "passwd" package, which manages the extra users for
certain Fink packages, was written by a house elf who has been an active
contributor to Darwin source code.

ask his opinion on the "users" situation. Perhaps you could eliminate
this as a source of your problem; I would be willing to bet money that
Dobbie followed the APIs.
