You have to do a bit more work to see anything-- here's a couple of lines
from my .xinitrc:

xfontpath install applettf freefont ghostscript msttf sharefont  
xfontpath enable

The first entry after "xfonpath install" refers to applesystemfonts.

I've had applesystemfonts installed for quite awhile now, but it 
doesn't seem to be doing anything I can detect.

I just rebuilt it, and restarted X11 - no apple system fonts in any X 
apps.  I restarted the computer, and still didn't get any apple 
system fonts.

What else can I try?  Are there some apps that don't work with 
applesystemfonts?  I've tried abiword, gnumeric, pan, mozilla, 
bluefish, gtkgraph and xephem.

I'm running Apple's X11 beta 3.
