xfontpath install /sw/lib/X11/fonts/applettf/ xfontpath enable
I tried replacing it with your suggestion, but I can't see any difference. Which Apple fonts should I see in X11?

You have to do a bit more work to see anything-- here's a couple of lines from my .xinitrc:
xfontpath install applettf freefont ghostscript msttf sharefont xfontpath enable
The first entry after "xfonpath install" refers to applesystemfonts.

I've had applesystemfonts installed for quite awhile now, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything I can detect.
I just rebuilt it, and restarted X11 - no apple system fonts in any X apps. I restarted the computer, and still didn't get any apple system fonts.
What else can I try? Are there some apps that don't work with applesystemfonts? I've tried abiword, gnumeric, pan, mozilla, bluefish, gtkgraph and xephem.
I'm running Apple's X11 beta 3.

I think this would only be helpful if you actually supplied a path to a remote font server on the main machine, but I'm not sure that Apple's X11 supports this.
Now that I look in /sw/share/docs/xfontpath, I see the README file. But I'm not sure which font paths I need to add to get applesystemfonts working. Can anyone provide a clue?
I think this is taken care of when you install applesystemfonts, but I may be wrong. I don't have an unstable installation to check it out.
And I still need to get AbiWord working when I ssh in from my iBook. Will xfontpaths help here, or do I have another problem I need to solve?
You might try copying the AbiWord fonts from the main Mac to the iBook, using the same path. It sounds like AbiWord is adding fonts to the path, but you don't have those fonts or paths on the iBook.
Bingo! I copied /sw/share/AbiSuite/fonts/ from my main Mac to the iBook, and now Abiword works. Thanks.
The apple system fonts are still not available, but I can live without them for now.
Thanks for your help,
