Failed: compiling freetype-hinting-1.3.1-8 failed Firstly, I find it odd that a package in stable/main does not build.
Errm, you are building version 1.3.1-8 from unstable, not 1.3.1-6 from stable. But anyway, there is no real difference between the two, as far as compilation is concerned.
interesting... I can find no trace of 1.3.1-8 on my system. I have 1.3.1-6 in stable as well as 1.3.1-6 and 1.3.1-7 in unstable. Like I
Your output shows that you are building 1.3.1-8. The version 1.3.1-8 is in a file named "freetype-hinting.info" without version number in the file name. The version number that counts is inside, in the "Version" field.
said before, I've no experience in patching fink packages, and I'd apperciate any pointers on how to do it correctly.
Probably because of these macro-patching problems, this package actually uses "gcc3" for compiling, which is gcc-3.1 and does *not* produce errors at these lines, only warnings. From the fact that you get errors, I conclude that on your system, "gcc3" is in fact gcc-3.3. What do you get from "gcc3 -v"? Both this and "ls -l /usr/bin/gcc*" should show that gcc3 is gcc-3.1 and not gcc-3.3.
Quite right... in fact I don't even have gcc-3.1 installed. But that
What system and what developer tools do you have installed? On Panther, if you have the DeveloperTools.pkg installed, you have /usr/bin/gcc3, which is gcc-3.1. If you don't have this, and in particular if you have some homegrown "gcc3" binary somewhere that is *not* gcc-3.1, you will get problems with compiling quite a few Fink packages.
dosen't help understand why my patch dosen't work (which I think I
Well, if you patch one package, but build another one, the patch won't show up, I suspect :-)
forgot to attach, I have this time). I suppose I could install gcc3.1 and be done with all this, but if these macros cause warnings with 3.1 then should not something be done to remove the warnings? I have a feeling gcc3.1 allows the macro pasting for backward compatibility, and gcc3.3 does not. Thus the code still is malformed and should be fixed. I do realize freetype version 1.x does not have a maintainer... I'd be happy to take that role, if only I knew what I was doing.
As far as I can see from the cvs log for the freetype-hinting package in 10.2/unstable, it was Dave Morrison who introduced this:
revision 1.4 date: 2003/10/07 12:01:44; author: dmrrsn; state: Exp; lines: +1 -0 force gcc 3.1
You can find the whole history of this package on Fink's cvsweb, for example.
