Your output shows that you are building 1.3.1-8.
agreed.
The version 1.3.1-8 is in a file named "freetype-hinting.info" without version number in the file name.
really? I thought I looked there...
The version number that counts is inside, in the "Version" field.
yup, I did, mine (which I just got from CVS) says: Version: 1.3.1 Revision: 7
go figure.
What system and what developer tools do you have installed? On Panther, if you have the DeveloperTools.pkg installed, you have /usr/bin/gcc3, which is gcc-3.1. If you don't have this, and in particular if you have some homegrown "gcc3" binary somewhere that is *not* gcc-3.1, you will get problems with compiling quite a few Fink packages.
I installed the dev tools freshly from the 20-some-part 600 MB XCode 1.1 download. I believe at the time there was an option to include/exclude gcc3.1/2.x. Its certainly not home grown.

Well, if you patch one package, but build another one, the patch won't show up, I suspect :-)
agreed.
I've since coppied my patch to /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/finkinfo/graphics/freetype-hinting.patch. In freetype-hinting.info I've added 'Patch: %n.patch' Now, 'fink install-hinting-shlibs' complains with:
patch -p1 </sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/finkinfo/graphics/freetype-hinting.patch
missing header for unified diff at line 4 of patch
can't find file to patch at input line 4
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:
--------------------------
|diff -Naur freetype-1.3.1.old/test/ftdump.c freetype-1.3.1/test/ftdump.c
|--- /sw/src/freetype-hinting-1.3.1-8/freetype-1.3.1/test/ftdump.c Sat Sep 4 01:11:29 1999
|+++ ftdump.c Wed Mar 3 11:49:30 2004
--------------------------
File to patch:
After some trial and error, I entered the full path to the file -- "/sw/src/freetype-hinting-1.3.1-8/freetype-1.3.1/test/ftdump.c" -- and everything compiled.
So it appears I was successful in patching freetype-hinting-shlibs_1.3.1-8, although the path specified in patch does not work. Again, I had -- and still have -- no idea how to make a patch for fink, so someone more knowledgeable should have a look-see. I have completed my original goal: "fink install msttcorefonts".
Thanks much form your help, Martin. --MP
