I've gotten several responses, and I'm trying to sort through everything.
First, thanks for all the help.
On abiword, Martin was correct. The app just takes bloody forever to launch.
On Gimp--I've got 1.2 installed. So from xterm I've got to type /sw/bin/gimp-1.2 and then it launches fine.
I'm afraid all the bash talk is driving me batty. :) Sorry, but it's all clear as mud; the man page doesn't explain to me why Terminal.app will launch the apps fine in Apple's X11 but the xterm in X11 requires me to type /sw/bin/****
I've already moved Terminal.app back to using tcsh, but after second thought that just avoids me coming to an understanding of what I've been doing wrong.
Again, thanks for all the help & feedback so far (Justin, Lloyd, Michele, Martin, Alexander, Angel, & Roland as I'm typing this out). If you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know--
to sum up--I can get everything to launch, but my configuration of bash is not quite right and I'm not sure what to do to tweak it correctly.
Thanks! Brandon Potter

Okay,
I'm a little confused; If there's a really simple answer---please share. I've searched the archives for an hour or so and found a little to help; but I've found no complete solution however.
I just switched from an iBook to a Powerbook G4. I ran all the software updates, installed XCode (1.2) and then installed fink. Everything "installed" okay, but I can't get all the apps to actually run.
The previous shell I used was tcsh, and now it's bash. I'm willing to learn what I need to for bash use--I checked the archives for the list and pretty much all I found was to make sure that the .profile has
. /sw/bin.init.sh
and it does; I also set my display to use X11
export DISPLAY=":0.0"
and so I can launch qcad and xinvaders from Terminal.app but I cannot launch gimp and abiword. When I try fink install gimp I just get the message that there's no packages to install.
When I try to run gimp I get the following:
-bash: gimp: command not found
When I try to run abiword I get nothing. No messages, just nothing. I can break into the process using CTRL-C to regain control of Terminal.app.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Brandon Potter
