Hi Michele ,

I hope that helps , but I would be surprised . I am interested to find out what you think Brandon had done or is doing incorrectly ?
First to launch X11 applications from the Terminal with Apple's X11, the command is normally:
open-x11 myx11app

The fact to put X11.app as startup items does this.

Second, DISPLAY should be set in order to be able to launch X11 applications. Bash does not read the same file depending on the way the shell is launched (interactive or not, login or not), putting the DISPLAY setting in .bashrc ensures that it is set in all shells. See bash man page, section INVOCATION.

That's not true: .bashrc is _only_ read by non-login shells. bash reads either .bash_profile/.bash_login/.profile or .bashrc. That has led to great confusion amongst some users, but it allows to keep settings for login shells and subshells strictly separate. Note that this applies only to interactive shells (which means every shell which displays a prompt).

Third, unfortunately gimp version 2 has a launching name different from the app name. If you have completion enabled on applications you can view it typing gimp+tab, or just using: ls /sw/bin/gim*
