Of the responses I've received, this was the easiest and it works. I went into X11's prefs and added -ls to the xterm command & Viola'
Now when I launch xterm it sees the .profile, same as Terminal.app.
All the apps launch fine (thanks for all the gimp tips from everyone) without me having to manually type /sw/bin anymore.
I've not seen any problems, so I think it's all okay.

Have you tried launching xterm with the '-ls' option? That will ensure that the shell used in the xterm is a login shell (i.e., run your login script will be run). Assuming that solves your problem, you may want to change any xterm-related entries is .xinitrc, window manager menus, etc., to be sure this occurs for every xterm you launch.
