I mean my /sw/etc/fink.conf reads

I ran fink selfupdate and fink update-all and then fink install amarok
but the message “no packages to install” appears. I am obviously
missing something here. The folder amarok with sources appeared on my
computer, perhaps a result of fink build amarok? When trying to build
amarok myself from said folder I at first get a gcc error. Changing
gcc to 3.3 and then trying again, I get an error that qt isn’t
installed even though it is.

Does "fink list amarok" show it as installed (an "i" by the package
name) or nonexistent?
You probably should include stable/main and stable/crypto as well in
fink.conf.
The error you got for the manual build is because of Fink's
"non-standard" location for stuff, most likely.
