To bring some closure to this thread, I have since found other problems in /sw which I was unable to easily correct. I also found that the updated gnumeric (1.10.0-1) was not working with graphs, and needed to downgrade to 1.8.4-1. My solution was to use the Time Machine to replace my /sw with the copy predating the appearance of the error. It appears to have been effective.
