As I said in my initial reply on the thread, the issue is with Xquartz
(2.6.1, which I didn't mention) on 10.5.8 _PowerPC_.  For the same
Xquartz version on 10.5.8/Intel, the issue doesn't appear.

So, yes, you're not on the same architecture.
