Sounds to me that you're not the target audience, then. =)

Yes, that is the biggest problem.  I'm not sure how to solve the dock issue,
and the basic problem is that text *is* a horizontal thing (in English, at
least), and so any attempt to put the bar on the side will involve a hack of
some sort...

Well, perhaps the best argument I can make is that it's difficult to fit
information on 15 buddies into a 32x32 square in the menubar. =)

It doesn't really impact you, because you don't mind not having the
information handy, but many people want to know who is online on a fairly
ongoing basis.  It really wouldn't be a very workable solution to have to go
click in the menubar every time you wanted to see who's online.  I had
considered this solution, but it just didn't seem to really solve anything
that minimizing the window didn't, as you point out.
