I cut my teeth on BSD 4.2 way back in the early 1980s. The Berkeley folks
always did a good job at implementations. Of course, there was discussion
back then about how big the kernel was getting (> 200K for the kernel
object file) and why it was getting so bloated. So bloat is relative. I
remember running an old AT&T V6 kernel on a 64K PDP11/60. I believe the
kernel was under 20K. So moving to BSD on a VAX11/780 with 8 meg of memory
was a big step up.
As to Linux, you can strip it down. I'm using Linux as a PPP router and
the total install is around 20 meg. I'm sure I could get rid of a lot of
the unused utilities, but why bother. I have found the XFree86 stuff takes
up the most room with its fonts, etc. So I do not install X.
