I'm using NT since 3.1 Advanced Server and my euphory for this OS has decended
to sobering. We're running mission critical applications (SAP R/3 and ADABAS D)
on NT, which I can tell, that's very reliable. We also evaluated FW solutions
under NT. They either didn't give the performance we needed nor they can be
configured as secure as we wanted.
I don't say M$ is a bad solution, not at all, but NOT FOR securing a network.
You don't now, what the system is doin', you install a SP and get all your
customizations in the registry deleted or switched. There is no possibility to
test any patches and their interoperability, because you're not able to fix only
your specific error but you have to "correct" all the errors that are obviously
fixed.
We have 16 NT server running and I'm proud of having a such highly integrated
homogenous network running, but NOT for securing a network.
Even if you talk to MCEs they tell you, you can be able to run a fw under NT,
but they really don't recommend that.
Only my EUR 0.02.
